Yeahhh I had a feeling it was a dog! But it took a much darker turn than I imagined, too; surprising and fun!

Ha good, I am happy you enjoyed it James. I don't usually find myself writing something of this tone but it happens and usually with a comedic twist - to soften the blow perhaps.

Anyway, I go where the pen takes me.

This is great fun! I thought it might be a cat rather than a dog. One of our old cats—Cali—nothing was safe.

Yea i guess it's nice to leave that open ended for the reader. Our cat is currently on a spree, almost worse when they are still very much alive and she deposits them on the kitchen floor 😬... I'm not sure I've known many dogs like that tbh

Glad to hear it 😅 wasn't really sure if this would land with everyone. But if you know... you know. 😅

Worse when you catch the scent and can't get to it...

😅 yes... Kinda as if some food or milk has been left out but there is nothing that you can see... Start getting suspicious 😂

The picture was a giveaway, but great poem! I can’t tell you the number of beheaded baby rabbits my cat would leave on the porch. The rabbits have taken over my lawn now that she’s gone. Just one more reason I miss her!

Ha! Yes I left the picture off for a day or so because I felt the same. I can’t imagine all the beheaded bunnies 😬 we mainly get mice, shrews and birds… once a glove… and another time a plastic robin christmas decoration

Refreshing pivot in style here David. Really like it. And the turn and reveal.

Yes! And after we had just been discussing "the turn" and all... A lirrle clumsy on my part but was fun, and it just sort of happened as we had said is usually the case 😅

It's when you find the bodies, decomposing, a week later 😱

😂 yes... Once found one, dry and dusty, underneath the rug in the living room. When we eventually found it I recalled a morning when the corner of the rug was inexplicably folded back over and I just fixed it without thinking... That had easily been 5-6 months previous. 🤦

Copious amounts of disinfectant and vanish followed.. a new rug was purchased.

Whoa. I'm intrigued but a little confused. The opening stanza is killer (ha, ha, pun so intended) and I love this:

"I Watched them pull

their broken body

over the back wall."

But I sense I may be missing something.

😅 thanks for the comment. Yes i'll let the poem sit for a while so as not to spoil it for anyone. ☺️
