This is such an appropriate read today as my kids start summer holidays. I'm already questioning how the hell did June just pass me by. Absolutely love the rhythmic flow to this.
Yes. Sometimes it just seems to fly by. Never too late to slow it down i suppose. I remember reading once that time seems to fly when your brain is experiencing familiar things so it just fills in your experiences with memory rather than register the same thing again (or something like that) so the key to "slowing time down" is to feed your mind with new experience as much as possible.. or practice that mindfulness stuff to some extent.
But its interesting in that way.. how the mind works.
Yes, that mindfulness stuff, what's the recipe again?! I actually remember reading about the new versus routine re slowing time. Hard to find the time to do the new.
So, I was at the gym this morning and a favorite song turned up in my mix and it made me think of this poem. All about time, and days, and wasted moments. So now when I hear the song again I'll also think of your poem. Which is really cool. The song is Weak Days, by Kaiti Jones. She's from my town and my daughter and her friends introduced me to her music a couple of years ago.
Well this mind blowing 🤯 crazy for me to appreciate that someone might build an association like that with someother creative work in the world and just recall it in your everyday life. That is huge for me to hear i really appreciate you sharing that. I will check out that song and artist now too. Thank you!
I love this so much! It captures so perfectly all the ways we humans try to capture time, and fail. It's a construct yet a constant. We wrestle with it constantly. What a treat to read. Thank you!
You're so good! The way the poem last week made me pause, read slowly, reflect, and then this one! Which I read with the speed of its cadence, reflecting the quickness of this summer season in the northern hemisphere, with the urgency I feel every June to fill these long, light days with growing, doing, creating. And within both poems, a push and pull of time that then extends out to the contrast in the styles between the two poems. I love how you weave your work together. So good.
Oh wow thanks so much for appreciating the thread between the different pieces. I deliberately post in seasons so that i can put together a real collection each time as if it were pages in a book. So its great to see that recognised in some way. As much as substack is great for so much it can be hard to break down that barrier and have a series read as one collection.
Someone said the other day there are so many poema about trees at the moment, and I've written a few in the last while.. but time too.. im writing a lot about time 😅
It really is a fascinating subject. To develop a deeper understanding of its presence and power. Maybe even how to be its master. And how the right line, like a song, brings that exact feeling to life.
Speaking of time, I really don't have the time today to read posts or write a post! I have a doctor's appointment later this morning and I do hope my son doesn't forget to come and pick me up! But maybe later, after breakfast and after I take a shower, I will find some time to read, and write posts! Time! Seems like I never have enough time to do anything!
Love this. The beginning of this poem reminds me of 9. by ee cummings https://poets.org/poem/9
